The "before" - the window contained an old wood blind on the standard part of the window with the arch portion uncovered. This meant that the arch was super hot and the bottom was closed during the morning. To make this more challenging, the East side of the house faces a very beautiful mature park, so the view is the "money shot." One more consideration, the customer preferred a light and open feel in the kitchen work space.
We discussed fully louvered shutters, but decided they were too obstructive of the view and light. We discussed a wood blind with a wood arch above, but decided they also were too obstructive and comparatively expensive. Cell shade arches were a serious consideration, but they still obstructed the view all morning and provided a permanent block of the view through the arch.
So after much debate, this customer choose to purchase an outside mount solar roller shade in an alpaca charcoal color to maximize view. Additionally a 5% openness was chosen to control the glare and heat. To make it less noticeable, they choose a wall matching vanilla fascia.
The result exceeded expectations. The problems with the window were all solved and the park view is not only preserved but has been enhanced throughout the day. The heat s no longer an issue and the window never had a privacy issue, so no concern has arisen. Additionally, this was one of the most affordable options available.
