Solar Shades and Infrared Solar Radiation

The part of the sun’s spectrum known as infrared is the part we perceive as heat. As the seasons change, and the weather changes day to day, your ability to control your environment is affected by how much infrared radiation reaches your windows or patio.

Solar roller shades offer the advantage of being retractable, so at warmer times, you can lower them to take advantage of maximal heat control, and at cooler times, you can raise them all the way, or just enough, to take advantage of letting more warmth into the house.  This flexibility is far superior to an external seasonal screen for heat control, because it allows you to maintain light ambiance control as well as temperature control, to fit your lifestyle.

Solar screen fabrics are manufactured very precisely, and for every screen fabric type, we have fenestration data that has come from testing the fabric’s performance. The number we’re concerned with, in terms of heat, is called the Shading Coefficient, and it expresses how effective the fabric has been measured to be at filtering the heat from infrared solar radiation.  There are lots of options to fit lots of custom needs and seeking the help of an expert is advisable.

To that end, we would love to discuss the multitude of options and ways that solar roller shades can modernize and manage your living or working space.  Also, for a quick idea of what your solar roller shades project might cost, check out our online roller shade cost calculator.

As it relates to commercial work, we probably get more calls for solar roller shades in restaurants than any other type of commercial application.  While almost any commercial application is well suited to solar roller shades, it is the restaurant industry that seems to be leading the way.  This may be due to the highly competitive nature of the business and the need to provide a memorable experience for their patrons.

So what is it about solar roller shades that attracts restauranteurs?

Solar screen shades in restaurants make it possible for every seat in a dining area to be used during the busiest times of the business day.  This is because solar roller screens:
  • Reduce the glare
  • Preserve the view
  • Create ambient light & ambiance
  • Protect interior finishings
  • Provide guest comfort
  • Have Reliable child-safety options
  • With dark colored fabrics control glare most efficiently and allow the best view-through

Whether your restaurant concept calls for patrons to be able to separately control the shades in their own seating areas, or for all shades to be automatically controlled from a central location, we can make your perfect control scenario a reality.  Additionally, restaurants located within hotels or other large facilities can have shades operated as part of a building automation system to maximize efficiency. Small restaurants may wish to have shades controlled by wall switches located out of the hands of guests or operated by radio remote control.

We actually have provided many restaurants with the perfect solar roller shade solution and we would love to help you with your restaurant project.  Also, for a quick idea of what you restaurants solar roller shade project might cost, check out our online roller shade cost calculator.

Roller shades are extremely popular right now with designers and homeowners.  The technology has come a long way, the fabrics are stunning, and the look is clean and modern.  However, one of the seldom discussed benefits of roller shades is the child safety aspect.

Roller shades have no cording that runs through the blind, nor do they provide open slots or gaps for children or animals to become tangled in.  Roller shades can be made as a motorized or cordless - meaning there is a zero chance of strangulation because a cord became tangled around a neck.  Even the beaded cord loop option that we offer exceeds safety guidelines.  That is because our metal select locking chain guide is one of the best on the market.  Stylish and sturdy - when properly installed.

Additional Child-Safe Window Shade Recommendations:
  • Use cordless or motorized shades in playrooms and children's bedrooms.
  • Keep cribs away from windows with corded window treatments.
  • Shorten cords to be out of reach of young children.
  • Inquire with a local window treatment dealer about child safe chains or cord guides, if you have free-hanging loops on existing window treatments.

We would love to work with you on your roller shade project and we can answer all you questions as relates to safety.  Also, please check out our online roller shade cost estimator - for a rough idea as to the cost of your project.

It has been a long time since we have been so excited by a new line of options.  But, truthfully, this Spring saw the launch of a new line of fabrics for our indoor roller shades - and they are amazing looking.

The collection expanded and updated our current options and includes 41 new fabric patterns and 131 new colors! The new selection takes the latest design trends into account with 31 grays and interesting textures to meet every decorating style.

This new collection is broken into 5 categories to accommodate various design and functional needs.  They include:
  1. Sheer:  Light filtering with view-through; objects and colors on the outside can be seen.
  2. Semi-sheer:  Light filtering with partial view-through and varying privacy levels; objects on the outside are partially obscured.
  3. Solar Screen:  Screen fabric with precise openness and technical properties; object visibility varies with openness and color.
  4. Translucent:  Light filtering with no view-through; object shadows may be visible.
  5. Blackout:  Opaque fabric with no view-through; objects are not visible.

So, depending if your are looking for subtle or dramatic, our decorative fabrics feature weaves and textures that bring tactile, sensory style to your room. Larger threads woven with smaller threads to form organic textures that mimic raw silk, or natural material textures like bamboo, reeds and grasses. Weave patterns bring out subtle motifs, and varying amounts of light reflection in the fabric's texture. This variation can add dimension to a room, and texture that can bring neutral schemes to life, or quiet a dominating color or pattern in a space.

We really are super excited about this new offering - and the response at industry trade shows has furthered our confidence that we are really in possession of a roller shade design element game changer.  As such, we would love to work with you on your roller shade project.  Also, for rough estimating of what your project might cost, check out our online roller shade cost calculator.
